Relief Project: Vital Breath for Sanfilippo Families

Imagine a world in which every family with a child affected by Sanfilippo syndrome can find a moment of relief and serenity. Thanks to the Relief Project, this dream is becoming a reality, providing qualified home care to Sanfilippo families throughout the country.

Why is Project Relief needed?

Sanfilippo children need constant care at different stages of the disease:

Initial Hyperactivity Phase

Children are dangerous to themselves and others.

They risk swallowing objects and can hurt themselves.

Hypoactivity phase

Problems related to an altered inflammatory system develop.

Respiratory complications emerge.

Terminal phase

Needing day and night care.

Impact of the Relief Project

The hours of care guaranteed by the state are always too few. Parents have to devote the whole day to the child, resulting in work and personal problems. The ‘burden’ of care impacts on the caregiver’s health, causing fatigue, sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression, high blood pressure and gastrointestinal disorders. In addition, they often adopt unhealthy lifestyles by putting the needs of the family member before their own well-being.
Thanks to the Relief Project, we alleviate this emotional stress by giving Sanfilippo families 5 hours per week of qualified home care.
From February 2023 to the present day, these weekly hours have become an important moment of physical and mental regeneration for parents, essential for dealing with the delicate family situation.
