Bruno is twenty-two years old, the eldest, the forerunner, our mascot. In this obstacle race that is his life, Bruno is a tireless runner, who is not afraid of scraped knees and keeps going.
Twenty-two years and many different Bruno’s: this is the reality, joy and pain, of Sanfilippo. Everyone who knew him carries with them a little piece of a different Bruno. Bruno was a very sweet child, with a candid tenderness and a sincere smile that swept away the shadows. Over time, the hurricane he was became bora, then maestrale, then a faint but still perceptible breeze. The Bruno of now is not the Bruno of yesterday, but his presence is indisputable, evident. You cannot hear it but you can see it, it is rustling leaves, no longer the power of the air.
Bruno was a performer, a cabaret artist, he loved to be the centre of attention, he sang all the time. Now his voice is a whine and a wheeze, but mother Serafina swears she has never heard a more beautiful stornello. Life is strange, illness cruel, there is no meaning, no logical reason to so much pain. However, Bruno testifies that life is life always, it is not measured in performance. Bruno is worthy, of receiving and giving love. There is no higher dignity than this. If you are looking for an answer to so much pain, Bruno would not know what to tell you. He responds to injustice with dignity, to the absurd with the tenacity of his breath.
The future for Bruno is TODAY … not tomorrow, not next week, next month, a year from now. These are all times with which he is not allowed to compete. Planning? Voice of the verb: ‘barring unforeseen circumstances’. Impatiently we wait for a cure for the little ones, Bruno is rooting for them.
